I don’t know if this disclaimer is necessary, but you must know that I am not a doctor or a psychiatrist or anything medically related. The information I have provided below is to be used at your own risk (not that it is risky) and should not be considered as advice. However, I am a business person that has experienced my fair share of stress and I have found these hacks to be most valuable.
Insomniacs listen up!
I know how bad it feels to not get the REM sleep that we desperately need to perform our daily duties. Instead of the tossing, turning, and wondering the house at 3AM, I have come up with a list of ways that help me get through insomnia and get back to sleep.
A good night’s rest is critical to your functionality and productivity. Without it, your energy and focus can be significantly lower than what is necessary to achieve your goals. Rest and sleep are vital to achieving success. It is true. Your body and your mind repair during this time. Without that time to repair, you feel worn and burdened when you should be feeling motivated and active.
Here are a few of my favorite resources for getting to sleep fast, staying asleep, and waking up rested and energized for the new day.
Whisper Hypnosis
So, I got into hypnosis a few years back when I was a swimmer. I loved the feeling it created in me while laying there and imagining parts of my body reaching new levels of relaxation. By exploring hypnosis as an adult and a business owner, I realized how valuable it is in helping me reach maximum relaxation, even during very stressful and productive times.
While listening to a speaker perform a hypnotic induction nightly, repeatedly for years, it became quite dull and lost the ability it provided to me. I began to explore new styles of hypnosis and landed on Whisper Hypnosis. It’s exactly like regular hypnosis, but done with a whisper. This stuff is like a sugar rush to a kid, expect the opposite.

Whisper Hypnosis + ASMR
While continuing this exploration through Whisper Hypnosis, I also came across ASMR (the tingling sensation you get on the back of your neck and scalp). It is great for relaxing, but I actually found it to keep me awake when I wanted to fall asleep.
However, I found my perfect audio sleeping pill when I came across the combination of whisper hypnosis and ASMR. I feel like sleeping just thinking about it. Seriously, this delivers the drool invoking type of sleep I crave.

When the Whisper Hypnosis and ASMR lose their edge, I know it is time to take a break and listen to something else. This allows me to come back to them after a few nights for the relaxing sensations to return.

How To Listen
I listen to all audio with a small Bluetooth ear piece (Plantronics M55). I will admit, headphones are much more effective, but the ear piece is wireless (so no chance of getting strangled) and it falls out of my ear after I am asleep.
WARNING – A word of caution if you are considering this approach. I have accidentally called a Chinese restaurant at 4AM from laying on the ear piece.
Also, I don’t actually watch the videos… only listen. On some devices, this does mean that you have to leave the app open (especially YouTube) and have it plugged in for charging. I face the screen down on the nightstand as to not be distracted by the light.
Last, if you are using a smart phone or tablet, you should use one of the available apps. This makes it easier to save favorites and quickly access the tunes when you are ready to get some rest.
The Crazy “Sleepless” Leg
I experience the “Sleepless Leg” issue from time to time. This is completely caused by being over stressed on something, which keeps me up for hours. It can be so bad that no amount of Whisper Hypnosis or ASMR can prevent or stop it. I have 2 ways that I fix this infuriating problem.
1. Move to a different sleeping location.
2. Foot pressed to the foot board.
But I have too many ideas when trying to sleep!
You have made it this far, so you must be my clone!
Ideas come at anytime. Mine like to come when I am trying to get to sleep. I have learned the hard way that ideas at bedtime can be a nightmare.
Like me, your phone or a notepad is on the nightstand while you sleep (or attempt to). While my phone is playing the soft sounds of the whisper hypnosis, if an odd idea rushes through my thoughts, I immediately grab my phone and key it into my Trello tasks board. The notepad works for this too. I picked this up from David Allen’s Getting Things Done. The point is to get it out of your head quickly and leave it there. The idea is now written down and you will work on it TOMORROW, not now. So, get back to sleep.
